Please read these basic guidelines for sessions
What to Expect from Your First Reiki Session-WELCOME!
Sessions can usually be conducted in 30, 60 and 90 minute sessions. Please expect 90 minutes which includes an initial assessment of symptoms (to include any physical, emotional and spiritual concerns). Any information provided is treated with the same privacy standards as medical records. Nothing is shared unless written and signed permission to do so is given. As with any medical concern, this does not include intentional harm to self or to others. *Please see end note.
NOTE: Services provided by reikimaven are not to be substituted for a client's regular medical care. Do not stop medical therapies, treatments, medications or supplements without consulting with your licensed medical health care provider. Reiki and any other spiritual work is not intended as a primary treatment and it is not a cure.
reikimaven regards this work as an adjunctive treatment. Energy work can definitely affect individuals in different and profound ways. It is important for each client to communicate with the practitioner about any conditions and to provide symptom updates, in addition to reporting any troublesome sensations after treatment.
If requesting treatment for an animal, the same standards apply. Do not discontinue or change treatment without consulting a licensed veterinarian.
Brief Overview of Reiki Procedure
Reiki does not require hands on the body in most cases. If light touch is indicated, you will be asked first for permission to touch you.
Come dressed in clean, comfortable clothing that does not restrict the body. Shoes should be removed. Socks are fine to wear and can help regulate body temperature.
Most clients lie down on the reiki table (massage table). Some sit in a chair or lie down on the floor or stand, if any physical pain restricts any postures. A sanitized blanket, pillow and knee cushion are provided. Clients are welcome to bring their own supplies if preferred.
Please report any allergies to scents, aversions to soft music, or light sensitivity. This allows the practitioner to provide an optimal energy healing environment with few distractions.
After discussing needs, clients have the opportunity to visit the restroom and to drink water.
Once on the table, one may close their eyes. No conversation is necessary, but not restricted, especially if there is discomfort questions. Sometimes clients drift off, or completely fall asleep. Some clients report hearing noises or quiet speech, or seeing images while their eyes are closed. This occurs from time to time. Do not be startled. This is part of the process. It is okay not to understand it. Try not to judge it. Just remember to breathe.
The practitioner generally begins at the top of the head and works down toward the feet. If there are any restrictions or preferences to spiritual incantations, please inform reikimaven.
The practitioner's hands will generally rest in the energy field just outside the body, depending upon the client’s experience level. Some clients require work within 6-12 inches closest to the physical body. Some may need further out from the body.
The energy field will be “smoothed out” at the end of the session. The client is gently informed of the end. After a brief break, a few minutes are dedicated to discussion of any changes or sensations in the body.
Common sensations include tingling in extremities, warmth in chest, stomach, feet, hands or face. Sometimes clients feel dizzy. If this occurs, stay lying down and report it. Clients also report calmness, sleepiness and an overall relaxed physical sensation.
What if I don’t feel anything at all? How do I know if it is working?
This is normal too. Many clients report physical sensations emerging in days following the session. Sometimes, other issues arise regarding emotional or spiritual experiences. For example, if one is working through an issue privately, the treatment result may bring it to the forefront. Sometimes this is what happens in the healing process. Do not hesitate to reach out to discuss these concerns if necessary.
While every person’s reaction to Reiki will vary, one thing is agreeable: DRINK A LOT OF WATER. Hydration is important. Major dietary changes are not required. Just keep hydrated, especially during the first 24 hours after your session.
While it is not a requirement, but is preferable, inform health care providers with whom you work that you are receiving reiki treatment. Please be honest about any medical conditions or issues with the practitioner to ensure optimal energy work. Remember, health information is private.
What to Expect from the Reiki Practitioner:
-Safety from harm, abuse or violence
*Please note that if any client reports participation or intent to participate in harmful acts to self or to others, including but not limited to, physical, mental, emotional, sexual or financial abuse, I do not keep secrets. State and Federal laws require me to report any situations that violate these laws, especially if it involves children, disabled adults and older adults. If you have intent to harm yourself, I will assist you to get the professional support you need.
In immediate crisis, report to a hospital emergency room, call 911 or call a crisis line such as the Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK.

reikimaven does not work with health insurance. Energy work is not considered a covered service.
A sliding fee scale is available for those receiving Medicaid, SSI or SSDI and is intended only for those who would not otherwise be able to afford energy treatment, but may benefit from it. Proof of income limitations and aid are required. Fee will be negotiated on a case by case basis. Please inquire for details.
What about chakra work, auras, channeling and distance services?
If this is the first session, just focus on the present. While distance healing services are provided, it is best for those new to reiki to participate in person to get the most out of it. Reiki does include chakra work by design. Sometimes, other components naturally fall into place during the sessions.
Thank you again for visiting reikimaven. Enjoy the session!
